Queens, NY – Three days after President Trump signed the un-American ban on immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries, 71 individuals coming from 20 different countries have been helped by a dedicated team of pro-bono lawyers and volunteers still at JFK. Their efforts are coordinated by a volunteer team of lawyers representing various law-firms and nonprofits.
“This ban clearly affects more than just the seven targeted countries,” says Camille Mackler, Director of Legal Initiatives at NYIC. “And the turmoil inflicted by this sudden disruption is spilling over into the broader United States, as family members desperately seek to reunite with their loved ones. Students and professionals continue to be blocked from their homes, schools and workplaces. We have been here since the ban was imposed, advocating for those caught in the dragnet. We are especially concerned with individuals being prevented from boarding flights at points of departure.”
As of press time, the ban has affected travelers from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Turkey, Libya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, France, Algeria, Jordan, China, Malaysia, Qatar, Senegal, Switzerland, Algeria, Egypt, and Guinea.
The outpouring of support from people all over the US has been truly incredible, and those who want to take action are encouraged to call or email their Representatives and Senators, asking them to commit to obstruct any bills in Congress that are not the repeal of the Executive Order. Please use the #NoJusticeNoBills and #WithholdConsent hashtags in social media posts to support the effort.
